On August
11, 2024, the Faruk Mala Mustafa Underpass project was inaugurated in Sulaimani.
This project is one of the strategic projects for the city of Sulaimani,
providing a significant solution to the traffic flow of Sulaimani’s Malik
Mahmud ring road. The project was funded by Mr. Faruk Mala Mustafa, the
Chairman of Faruk Investment Group (FIG), as a contribution to improve the roads
and transportation infrastructure of Sulaimani.
The project
was implemented by Zaria Construction Company, one of the companies under FIG.
The project was completed in 625 days, with daily work lasting at least 12
hours. It was also overseen by the Sulaimani Municipality, the General
Directorate of Electricity of Sulaimani, and the Directorate of Water of
Sulaimani.
Here is a glimpse of the opening ceremony of Faruk Mala Mustafa Underpass.
The purpose
of the project is to reduce traffic congestion on Malik Mahmood ring road by
connecting the center of Sulaimani with the neighborhoods of Qirga, Kani Ba,
Ibrahim Ahmad, and Kaziwa. It will also benefit all areas in the southeast of
Sulaimani and beyond the boundaries of Malik Mahmood road. Additionally, the
project included the renovation of the water, sewage, electricity, lighting,
green spaces, and roads within the project area, all of which have been
upgraded to serve the people of Sulaimani.
The
underpass is 500 meters long, but the project did not just involve the
construction of the underpass itself; it also included the renovation and
construction of all the main and side streets on Malik Mahmood road within the
project's boundaries.
From an
engineering perspective, various elements were used in the project. More than
13,000 cubic meters of concrete was used for all parts of the underpass. Over
90,000 cubic meters of cutting work was carried out throughout the project.
Additionally, more than 80,000 cubic meters of filling was done on all sidewalks
and streets. The project’s asphalt work, which was carried out in two layers,
covered more than 85,000 square meters.
Over 650
tons of reinforcing bars were used in the project. Nearly 2,250 meters of
drinking water pipes of various diameters were utilized and renewed. Several
locks and air valves were replaced as well.
Regarding
the electricity cables, more than 12,000 meters of cable was laid underground,
giving the area a modern and urban appearance. Additionally, more than 11,000
square meters of asphalt was renewed.
The green
space, including trees and grass, covered more than 3,500 square meters. All
electricity poles and lights in the area were also renewed.
